Dexter: Resurrection

Dexter: Resurrection represents a huge leap forward for me professionally and creatively. This landmark series from Showtime/Paramount+ reached millions of viewers when it premiered, and I was proud to contribute over 130 cues across ten episodes.

Highlights include:

  • “Prater’s Theme”, an elegant & mysterious piano motif that recurs throughout the season as Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage) spirals into darkness.

  • A suite of three pieces for Charley (Uma Thurman) that develop as the season progresses, mirroring her character’s push-and-pull between morality and duty.

  • The extended dream sequence that opens the series, where Dexter is visited by the ghosts of his past.

  • The entire arc of Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris) as he befriends Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), sharing his, shall we say, sanguine proclivities.

  • Several full-orchestra cues as Prater descends into grandiose bloodlust and mania.

As assistant to Pat Irwin, I relished the opportunity to learn and grow from his wealth of experience. I admire his ability to combine just a few simple elements into an effective cue. It is counterintuitively more difficult to write simply than it is to add many many layers of complexity.

Writing music for a network TV series is like being a creative athlete - you’re out there every day writing, revising and conforming cues to the newest cut, developing muscle memory and an intuitive sense for what’s coming next. I strategically took time to rest and regenerate during the process (like every athlete needs to!), which made my work more consistent across all ten episodes over the course of nearly 7 months.

Special shout out to the entire Dexter music team, whose drive, creativity and vigilance pushed this score to be better and more encompassing: Sam Bishoff (asst composer), Jahn Sood (music editor) and Patrick Derivaz (mixer).
